About This Spot

Stepping into the DeBruce Center is like entering a lively crossroads where campus energy meets a thoughtful appreciation for heritage. The atmosphere carries the quiet buzz of a gathering place—students hunched over books, friends sharing quick meals between classes, and visitors drawn to the historical charm nestled just upstairs. It’s a space that hums with purpose, yet feels welcoming and familiar, inviting you to settle in whether for a study session, a casual bite, or a quiet moment of reflection.

As a hybrid of cafeteria, coffee shop, and museum, the DeBruce Center offers more than just sustenance. The air carries the comforting aroma of freshly brewed coffee alongside the soft clatter of trays and the murmur of conversations. There’s a sense of choice here—whether you’re tempted by the simple pleasure of a warm wrap or the fresh allure of sushi, the menu feels both approachable and thoughtfully curated to a student crowd that appreciates variety. It’s the kind of place where grabbing an energy drink or yogurt feels like a small, familiar ritual within a busy day.

The communal seating can fill up quickly, reflecting its role as a hub for campus life, but even in the midst of a bustling lunch hour, there's an underlying rhythm that balances the youthful energy with the calm focus of study zones. This backdrop makes it easy to lose track of time, whether you're waiting for a friend, catching a quick meal before class, or simply soaking in the unique atmosphere.

What truly sets the DeBruce Center apart is the connection to history woven throughout its walls. Upstairs, the original rules of basketball stand on proud display, a quiet yet compelling reminder of the game’s birthplace right here in Lawrence. It’s a subtle invitation to pause, reflect, and appreciate the layers of stories that make this spot more than just a cafeteria. It’s a gathering place where moments are shared—over food, study, or quiet discovery—that feel both immediate and timeless.

Good cafeteria (with the famous chicken cheddar wrap) and a mini Starbucks. Good sushi. It's all overpriced but decent stuff. Energy drinks and yogurt also available.

Second time at a KU basketball gave, but first time at De Bruce. There were so many options for eating and it all looked really good. Kind of hard to choose one meal. Prices were decent, I just wish plain bottled water wasnt $5.00 each, that's kind of high. But I'd definitely come here again...

Cool place for KU students to study & eat. Very cool piece of history to have the original rules of the game located up stairs for anyone to view!

Clean, close to campus, enough room and good environment to study, food is great! In short, awesome place!

Probably some of the best food you will find on campus but the seating sucks because there is so many people there.

This place was an amazing experience! The only problems were, we couldn't figure out how to pay for parking. Also, I'm glad that the original rules are were they belong, Kansas! I didn't like how they were in a darkened hallway were you couldn't even see through the glass unless you pressed a button that lit up the whole place and the fact that everyone started looking at you as soon as the audio played. Also, Allen Fieldhouse should be open to the public! This was an amazing experience and will be returning!
